NEW YORK, NY, 21 April 2004 - Droplets, Inc., today announced the availability of its Droplets for Micro Focus COBOL product. Droplets for Micro Focus COBOL provides programmers with a framework for creating rich thin client applications that feature the full GUI capabilities of fat client software, directly from the desktop or in a Web browser, while maintaining all application code securely on the server. Programmers create Droplets applications using Micro Focus Object COBOL on the server with the Droplets Software Development Kit. All coding of the user interface layer is directly done in COBOL, with no transcoding.
This latest variant of the Droplets framework gives COBOL developers a compromise-free way to develop up-to-date, real-time, native GUI interfaces on their legacy COBOL applications and the ability to continue to enhance those applications at the COBOL layer. COBOL-powered Droplets can be delivered to any Java-enabled Web browser or directly to PC and Macintosh desktops. Droplets applications run on HP/UX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows servers.
We are very pleased to be able to give COBOL developers the same powerful rich thin client capabilities that we have been providing to Java and C++ developers for years, said Frank Rose, Droplets Chief Technology Officer. We understand that there is a very large community of COBOL programmers who have been given few choices for delivering modern user interface technology, until now.
Droplets customer Paul Teitelbaum, EVP of Datatech Software Corp., concurs. "We looked at a variety of solutions from the leading vendors, but no one else could give us what we needed: a GUI for our UNIX-based COBOL applications with full-functioned native-platform windowing (i.e., not HTML), and with the high productivity of 100% server side (i.e., not client-server) coding. Droplets met our needs perfectly, Mr. Teitelbaum said.
